Greenwich considers plan to establish Citizens Police Advisory Committee to enhance accountability

by universalverge

GREENWICH — The Board of Selectmen is contemplating a proposal to create a Residents Police Advisory Committee that may “help in enhancing the transparency and public accountability” of the Greenwich Police Division.

The committee would enable citizen oversight of the police division’s inside affairs and processing of complaints of misconduct by the general public, stated City Administrator Ben Branyan, who offered the proposal to the Board of Selectmen on Wednesday.

The primary selectman, who can also be the city’s police commissioner, would nonetheless maintain full management of ultimate selections on any disciplinary motion towards police, except in any other case directed by the city constitution or the labor contract with the Silver Defend Affiliation.
